The long, hot, and humid summer days are upon us, which can sometimes dampen your efforts to enjoy the outdoors. As temperatures rise, your furry friend faces unique challenges that require special attention. Ensuring your pet remains comfortable, safe, and healthy during the seasonal heat involves a combination of preventive measures, proper care, and awareness of your pet’s heat-related illness signs. Our Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital team explains how you can help your four-legged friend safely enjoy the summer with you.

Play outdoors with your pet in the morning or evening

Fresh air and exercise are vital for your pet’s health, but timing is crucial during the summer. Walk or play outdoors with your furry friend early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are lower. Avoid midday walks or activities outdoors, opting for indoor games. Remember that humidity plays a part in heat exhaustion, so avoid taking your pet out to play when the temperatures and humidity levels are high.

Keep your pet hydrated by always having water available

Like people, cats and dogs need plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially during hot weather. Ensure your pet has constant access to clean water by placing several bowls around the house and in the yard. Bring extra water and a collapsible pet bowl specifically for your furry pal when on a walk or traveling in the car.

Provide shade for your pet

If your pet spends time outside with you, ensure shaded areas are available where they can escape the sun. Use tarps, umbrellas, or purpose-built pet tents to provide cool resting spots. Direct sunlight can quickly lead to overheating and sunburn, particularly in pets with light-colored fur or exposed skin. If you take your pet to a natural area or beach, bring umbrellas to shade them.

Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle

Leaving your pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes, can be deadly. Temperatures inside a vehicle can skyrocket in no time, leading to hyperthermia and heatstroke. If you need to run errands, leave your pet at home, where they are safe and cool.

Regularly bathe and groom your pet

Regular grooming helps maintain your pet’s coat health, eliminating mats and tangles and increasing their general comfort. Consider a summer trim for long-haired breeds, but avoid shaving them down to the skin. A well-maintained coat can provide insulation against the heat. Regular brushing also helps remove loose fur and promotes air circulation on the skin.

Know the signs of heatstroke in pets

Heatstroke is a serious risk for pets during the summer and can be life-threatening if left untreated. Signs include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area, offer sips of room-temperature water, and contact our Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital team immediately.

Protect your pet’s paws from scorching surfaces

Asphalt, concrete, sand, and dirt can become extremely hot under the summer sun. Check the ground surface with your palm before allowing your pet to venture across it. If it feels hot, walk on a grassy area or wait until the sun goes down. In addition, consider outfitting your pet in dog booties for added paw protection.

Plan travel with your pet’s safety in mind

If you’re traveling with your four-legged friend, ensure they are always comfortable and safe. Use a secure carrier, never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle, and provide frequent potty and water breaks for their comfort and hydration.

Choose pet-friendly summer activities

Engage your pet in summer activities that keep them cool and entertained. Swimming is an excellent option for dogs who enjoy water and are adept swimmers. Always supervise pets around water to ensure they know how to quickly exit the pool or body of water. If your dog isn’t comfortable swimming, you can run a sprinkler in the yard. Keeping your indoor cat entertained and exercised can be accomplished by enticing them with interactive toys, and allowing them to climb on cat trees and window perches.

Summer can be an excellent time for outdoor fun with your furry pal if you take the proper precautions. You can help your pet stay comfortable and well-hydrated by remaining vigilant and proactive.
