A native son of Mt Pleasant, Kevin was surrounded by veterinary medicine from birth. His father, retired veterinarian K.C. Shuler, practiced in Mt. Pleasant from the 1970s-2000s. The Lowcountry runs in Kevin’s blood and defines who he is. His childhood was filled with memories of visits to the famous soda fountain at Pitt Street Pharmacy and attending Mount Pleasant public schools, both within a short bicycle ride from his home. As Kevin reached his teen years, he cultivated his love of all creatures great and small by working at both his father’s and uncle’s veterinary hospitals during the school year. The summers were spent on the cattle and peach farm in Holly Hill, SC with his farming side of the family. There he not only learned how to manage livestock but also how to conduct business with people who would come to buy the cows and peaches. Kevin’s interests led him to Clemson University where the College of Agriculture laid the foundation for his veterinary career. There he met and later married Laura (Huckabee) Shuler. After completing his undergraduate studies, Kevin spent a year of veterinary school in St. Kitts before returning stateside to finish at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Home has always been Mt. Pleasant so it was here he returned to begin his veterinary practice with his wife, Laura, and father at the family business. In his leisure time, Kevin can be found on a tennis court or coaching his boys’ various sports teams or attending one of his beloved Clemson Tiger football games. More than anything, though, he loves making a difference to every “furry patient” he meets to ensure that both pet and owner are satisfied with their care.
Laura Shuler, DVM
A native of South Carolina, Laura was introduced to veterinary medicine at an early age. Her father, Dr. Eddy Huckabee, opened the first large- and small-animal veterinary practice in the growing town of Lexington, SC in the Piedmont region of the State. Growing up in the world of rural veterinary medicine, Laura went on farm calls and was an office aide. A lover of horses, Laura could also be found venturing out to local shows or crossing the then two-lane Highway 378 to seek greener pastures to gallop across. Her love of all things nature extended to fossil collecting that continues today. College at Clemson University was an easy choice as she had grown up going to the games with her family. (Dr. Huckabee also attended Clemson as an undergraduate.) There, Laura met and later married Kevin Shuler. From Clemson it was on to Veterinary school at Tuskegee University. Following graduation, she returned to her native South Carolina but this time to the Lowcountry to practice with her husband at his family-owned Mt. Pleasant Animal Hospital. In her leisure time, Dr. Laura enjoys cooking, jogging, horseback riding, Pilates, fossil collecting, or helping assist Dr. Kevin in coaching their two boys’ ball teams. Dr. Laura strives in all ways to help better the lives of all the “four-legged children” she sees and their pet parents.
Marian Shuler Holladay, DVM
Veterinarian, CCRP, CVA
Another Mount Pleasant native, Dr. Marian Shuler Holladay, experienced the best of both rural and suburban life as a child. On weekends and during the summer she was often found in her grandfather and uncle’s veterinary clinic in St. George, SC. There, she developed her love of the profession – from helping to pull calves, to scrubbing up to assist in small animal surgery, to drawing horse markings on shipping and testing papers. Like most other Shulers, she attended Clemson University where she earned a BS in Animal and Veterinary Sciences in 2001. After Clemson, she completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia in 2005, and joined the Shuler Veterinary Clinic/Shuler Veterinary Clinic family. In 2009, she completed her certification as a Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner and has developed a rehab/physical therapy component to help animals in the practice. Always a student, Dr. Marian completed Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture from the Chi University in 2021. She incorporates Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine to create a comprehensive and integrative approach in helping her patients maintain a comfortable and healthy life.
Dr. Shuler Holladay has remained active in the veterinary world, serving as an officer in her local veterinary medical association as well as a member and as President of the UGA Veterinary Alumni Board. Outside of school and work, she has always used music as a stress reliever. She has been a member of several performance choirs throughout the years and continues to sing weekly in her church choir. Other musical ventures include a handbell choir and just playing the piano at home.
Dr. Marian and her husband live in Mount Pleasant with their two darling human daughters and their various assortment of pets. They enjoy family bike rides, trips to the beach, and finding the occasional ice cream shop.
Juliet Hill, DVM
Growing up in Mt. Pleasant, SC, Dr. Juliet Hill has always had a love for spending most of her time outside enjoying the beautiful low country weather, water, and wildlife. A fascination for biology and adventuring in nature with her beloved four-legged family members lead Dr. Hill to pursue a BS in Biological Sciences from the College of Charleston. While in college, Dr. Hill gained both experience and a passion for veterinary medicine after working for a local veterinary clinic. Following the College of Charleston, Dr. Hill completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia in 2021. Upon graduation, Dr. Hill moved right back down to Charleston, SC to continue to pursue her career in the city she loves.
In her spare time, Dr. Hill enjoys spending time out on the beach, a boat, or her paddle board. She also has a love for traveling and exploring the cities and nature of other countries. She currently lives with her very feisty and independent cat, Elsa, and her new Golden Retriever, Miso.
Janette Blackwood, DVM
Janette Blackwood grew up in Georgia with a strong interest in biological sciences and a love for animals. She met and befriended Drs. Kevin, Laura, and Marian Shuler through the Clemson University Pre-Vet Club while earning her BS degree in Animal Science. Janette earned her veterinary degree from The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. In 2006, she returned to beautiful South Carolina and has enjoyed practicing veterinary medicine in many forms, including traveling across the state as a relief veterinarian and co-owning her own practice. She was absolutely thrilled to reconnect with her friends from Clemson and continue her career by joining the team at Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital in 2022.
Janette has a passion for decreasing pet stress during veterinary visits and received her certification in veterinary Low Stress Handling in 2019. When not at work, you may find her volunteering with her church, spending time outside exercising or walking her dog Cindy. You may also find her with her husband on weekends freezing inside the Carolina Ice Palace while cheering on her son’s ice hockey team.
